Prep work for smooth start
A bit of research goes a long way. Before you hop on that plane, take some time to learn about your new home — from everyday customs to cultural do’s and don’ts. How do people greet each other? What’s the dress code on campus? What’s cool.. and what’s totally not? Getting a handle on the basics can help you skip the awkward moments and start off on the right foot.
2
Speak the Local Lingo
Even if your classes are in English, learning a bit of the local language can go a long way. Apps and YouTube videos make it super easy to get started. Just picking up simple phrases like “hello,” “thank you,” or “can you help me?” can break the ice and show locals you’re making the effort. Don’t stress about messing up — it’s part of the learning (and usually makes for a good laugh).
3
Explore Like You Mean It
It’s super tempting to try and see everything while you’re abroad — but sometimes, less really is more. Instead of packing your schedule, focus on a few places and really soak them in. Time your trips around local festivals, cool events, or cultural experiences that help you connect with the place on a deeper level. It’s not about ticking off cities — it’s about making memories that actually stick.
4
Live Like a Local
Once you're settled in, dive headfirst into everything your new home has to offer. Taste the local dishes, wander off the beaten path, and see how people really live, work, and hang out. Don’t be shy — strike up conversations with locals! They’ve got the kind of tips no guidebook can give. The more you immerse yourself, the faster this place will start to feel like home.
